Application & Planning
Most residencies require applications 6-12 months in advance of your desired start date. Competitive funded programs often have even longer lead times (up to 18 months). Use our Application Timeline Calculator to work backward from your target dates and create a realistic preparation schedule.
Standard application materials include:
- Artist statement (500-1000 words)
- Project proposal (specific to the residency)
- Portfolio (10-20 images or video documentation)
- Artist CV/resume
- 2-3 professional references or letters of recommendation
- Budget (for funded programs)
Some programs may also require specific essays, work samples in certain formats, or proof of language proficiency.
Costs vary dramatically:
- Fully funded residencies: $0 (competitive application)
- Budget-friendly: $500-1500/month (accommodation + studio)
- Mid-range: $1500-3000/month (private accommodation, better facilities)
- Premium: $3000-5000+/month (high-end amenities, extensive programming)
Use our Artist Residency Cost Calculator to estimate total costs including program fees, accommodation, materials, living expenses, visa fees, and international airfare for your specific situation.
Visa requirements vary by your citizenship and the host country. Many African countries offer:
- Visa-on-arrival for tourists (usually 30-90 days)
- E-visas for easy online application
- Visa-free entry for certain nationalities
For residencies longer than 90 days, you may need a cultural or work visa. Most reputable residencies provide invitation letters to support your visa application. Check specific country requirements early in your planning process.
Policies vary by program:
- Some residencies welcome partners and children, sometimes at additional cost
- Others are strictly solo-artist programs
- Many offer recommendations for nearby accommodations if dependents aren’t allowed on-site
Always check the residency’s “Guests & Visitors” policy in their listing and ask directly during the application process.
Many African residencies specifically welcome first-time international artists! Look for programs tagged as:
- “Emerging Artist Friendly”
- “First International Experience”
- “Mentorship Included”
- “Orientation Provided”
These programs typically offer more support with logistics, cultural adjustment, and navigating local systems.
Yes! We tag residencies with accessibility information including:
- Wheelchair accessible facilities
- Ground-floor accommodations
- Accessible bathrooms and studios
- Transportation support
- Specific accommodations available
Use our filter “Accessibility Features” to find programs that meet your needs. We encourage artists to communicate specific requirements directly with programs during the application process.
During Your Residency
Experiences vary, but most include:
- Private or shared studio space with basic equipment
- Accommodation (private room or shared housing)
- Community of artists for collaboration, critique, and socializing
- Cultural programming (site visits, studio visits, local artist meetups)
- Flexibility to work at your own pace
- Open studio or exhibition opportunity at the end
African residencies particularly emphasize cultural exchange, local engagement, and contextual research.
Most urban residencies offer reliable WiFi. Rural or remote programs may have limited connectivity—this is often listed in facility details. If internet is critical for your practice (digital art, remote work), verify connectivity before applying.
Like anywhere in the world, safety varies by location. We encourage you to:
- Research your specific destination city/neighborhood
- Read reviews from past residents
- Ask residencies about security measures
- Follow standard travel safety practices
- Register with your embassy if staying long-term
Most residency programs are in safe, artist-friendly neighborhoods and provide local orientation upon arrival.
Policies vary:
- Most residencies allow weekend excursions
- Some encourage regional exploration and provide recommendations
- Others expect full-time presence for community-building
- Extended absences usually require advance approval
Check each program’s attendance policy in their listing.
Most residencies accommodate dietary needs if informed in advance. Shared meal programs usually offer vegetarian options. For specific allergies or requirements, communicate clearly during the application and again before arrival. Urban locations offer more diverse food options than remote areas.
After Your Residency
Most residencies provide:
- Certificate of completion
- Letter of recommendation (upon request)
- Documentation photos/video of your work
- Exhibition/open studio announcement materials
These are valuable for your CV, grant applications, and future residency applications.

We’re addressing this gap while building toward a global directory that will expand to Asia (2027), Latin America (2029), and eventually Europe.
Yes! We’re building Bududa Art Villa in Bududa, Uganda—a flagship residency that will open in 2030. This hands-on experience informs our understanding of what residency directors need and what artists seek, making our platform more effective for both communities.
