Laini Studio Ceramics Residency

About the Residency

Laini Studio invites artists to discover the transformative power of clay in one of East Africa’s most vibrant creative capitals. This four-week ceramics residency in Kigali offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in a practice that bridges Rwandan artistic heritage with contemporary ceramic expression.

Founded by ceramic artist Umugwaneza Winnie Jeanette, Laini Studio—whose name means “soft, fluid” in Swahili—has become a celebrated hub for pottery in Rwanda since opening in 2019. The residency extends this ethos, creating space where technique meets intention and tradition sparks innovation.

The Program Experience

Over four intensive weeks, resident artists engage in a holistic approach to ceramics that goes far beyond technical training. The program weaves together hands-on studio practice with cultural immersion, creative dialogue, and personal reflection.

Studio Practice & Exploration Working alongside experienced mentors, artists develop their practice through hands-on sessions covering shaping, surface decoration, glazing, and firing techniques. Whether you’re refining existing skills or exploring clay for the first time, the studio provides guidance tailored to your artistic journey.

Cross-Cultural Exchange The residency brings together artists from diverse backgrounds for conversations, collaborative workshops, and shared making sessions. These exchanges become part of the work itself, influencing perspectives and opening new creative pathways.

Reflection & Storytelling Space is dedicated to creative introspection—journaling, discussion circles, and intuitive making sessions that connect ceramics to memory, identity, and personal narrative. Each piece becomes a vessel for meaning.

Cultural Immersion Site visits to Kigali’s galleries, heritage spaces, and community art initiatives expand artistic perspectives and ground the residency experience in Rwanda’s dynamic cultural landscape.

Public Exhibition The program culminates in a showcase of residency-created works, offering artists the opportunity to share their pieces with the local community and connect with Kigali’s growing contemporary art scene.

The Space

Laini Studio occupies a green oasis in Kigali’s Kimihurura neighborhood, designed to foster both focused work and creative flow. Surrounded by lush vegetation, the studio offers a serene atmosphere that visitors describe as peaceful and inspiring—a place where creativity and calm coexist.

The workspace features fully equipped ceramic facilities including kilns, wheel-throwing stations, and dedicated areas for hand-building. Artists have access to materials, tools, and professional guidance throughout their residency.

Location Context

Kigali has emerged as one of Africa’s most exciting cultural destinations, with a rapidly growing contemporary art scene, innovative galleries, and a deep commitment to creative development. The city offers excellent infrastructure, walkable neighborhoods filled with cafés and restaurants, and a welcoming creative community.
