National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo Artist-In-Residency Program
National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo Artist-In-Residency Program

The National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo offers a self-funded Artist-in-Residence Programme that supports creative exploration, research, and experimentation in the field of visual arts. The programme welcomes artists for periods ranging from two weeks to one year, depending on early registration and space availability.

Located in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city and a vibrant cultural hub, the National Gallery serves as the centre of the local art scene—linking contemporary artists, traditional craftspeople, and dynamic community networks. The city’s distinctive colonial architecture, rich Ndebele heritage, and thriving creative energy provide an inspiring environment for artistic growth.

Artists in residence are encouraged to engage with the local community through activities such as workshops, talks, presentations, or film screenings. The residency space is open to visitors at any time and emphasises meaningful interaction with local schools and community groups, fostering mutual learning and cultural exchange.

Participants will be invited to exhibit their work at the Gallery during or after their stay. Previous residents have come from the UK, India, South Africa, the USA, and Germany, contributing to a growing network of global artistic collaboration.

The programme welcomes emerging and established artists, curators, and researchers alike, including local Zimbabwean creatives, and encourages cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration as part of the residency experience.
