Driftwood Studios offers an inspiring coastal artist residency on South Africa’s dramatic Eastern Cape shoreline, where pristine dune forests meet the Indian Ocean. This intimate, artist-run residency welcomes sculptors, painters, ceramicists, writers, performers, and multidisciplinary creatives seeking affordable workspace, natural beauty, and meaningful community connections in one of Africa’s most biodiverse regions.

The Space & Facilities

Located in the tranquil village of Rainbow Valley, adjacent to Sunrise-on-Sea near East London, Driftwood Studios provides private and shared studio spaces equipped for diverse artistic practices. The main 6x14m gallery space serves as an ideal rehearsal area for dancers, theater artists, and performers, while dedicated workshops accommodate sculpture, woodworking, metalworking, stone carving, and ceramic arts.

Artists work with wood, metal, stone, or clay in well-equipped private studios, surrounded by coastal dune forest that has inspired creative work for over 15 years. The beach—just minutes away on foot—offers dramatic sand dunes, smooth stones, and abundant driftwood for material gathering and daily inspiration.

Curatorial Support & Local Networks

Residency director Claire Kockott brings 26 years of experience in South Africa’s art and community development sectors. As an active curator and arts facilitator, Claire collaborates with each artist before arrival to design personalized residency experiences aligned with individual creative goals and interests.

  • Assistance arranging exhibitions or community workshops
