Ubuntu Art Residency | Masindi Uganda
Ubuntu Art Residency is a multidisciplinary residency in Masindi, western Uganda, that supports artistic inquiry and creation in three areas: environmental, community, and interdisciplinary practice, allrooted in the land, ecology, and cultural heritage of the Bunyoro-Kitara region.
Located 14 km from Masindi town, surrounded by rolling hills, mixed farmland, and biodiverse ecosystems, Ubuntu offers a quiet, ecologically grounded environment for slow thinking, field-based inquiry, and sustained creative focus. We welcome artists, writers, designers, filmmakers, architects, environmental practitioners, cultural practitioners, curators, and researchers working across disciplines who seek depth, reflection, and meaningful engagement with place.
The programme is structured around three axes:
– Environmental — site-responsive and place-based practice, land and ecological art, eco-design and eco-criticism, environmental humanities, and cultural responses to ecological change and heritage
– Community—relational and socially engaged practice, intercultural exchange, community-based inquiry, and traditional and contemporary know-how, grounded in care, reciprocity and consent
– Interdisciplinary — practices moving between disciplines, methods and sectors: dialogue across art, design, performance, film, literature, science and technology, and hybrid, practice-led work
Residencies run from two weeks to three months. The programme is self-directed and process-oriented, supporting exploration, experimentation, and the development of ideas at their own pace. Outcomes may emerge, but the emphasis remains on inquiry and thoughtful engagement rather than production pressure.
Ubuntu is environment-led. There is no dedicated studio or specialist production facility—residents work responsively with the house, garden, and landscape, using flexible indoor and outdoor working areas, and bring materials suited to their own projects.
Community engagement is invited but never required and is always consent-based, credited, and reciprocal. Ubuntu does not support extractive approaches to land, culture, or community.
Residency fees are charged as weekly and monthly packages: US $600 for two weeks, US $1,100 per month, with a reduced Regional Rate for practitioners based in Uganda and East Africa. Full details at ubuntuartresidency.com.
